Gaul is present day France. English and France (Gaul) clashed, forcing the Hundred Year's War to take place, from 1338-1453, earning its name. The king of Gaul died in 1338, at the beginning of the war. Edward III was king of England, but he thought he should be king of France, but French nobles prevented him, so Edward invaded France. The bloody wars went on and on, but England won most of them. But the French kept fighting. Eventually, the French slowly won back their land, so the winner was never declared. Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who joined the French army at age 17. She was deeply religious and helped the French win back nearly all of their land. Unfortunately she was tried as a witch and burned at the stake in 1430. A few years later the French won the war.
